The Rivera Care Codex: Keeping Your Emerald Alive

Emeralds are not diamonds. This is a fact that every collector must internalise before the first stone enters their possession. Diamonds are remarkably tolerant of rough handling. Emeralds, rated between 7.5 and 8 on the Mohs scale and almost universally characterised by internal fractures — the jardin that gives each stone its unique fingerprint — require a fundamentally different approach to care.

Neglect an emerald and its inclusions will expand. The oils used to enhance clarity can dry and cloud over time, visibly diminishing a stone's appearance and its laboratory assessment. The difference between a well-maintained stone and one stored carelessly for a decade can be significant both aesthetically and commercially.

Cleaning: What to Avoid

The single most important rule in emerald care: no ultrasonic cleaners, and no steam cleaning. Both introduce vibrations and heat that can propagate existing fractures, causing a stone to crack along its natural jardin. Many a fine emerald has been ruined by a jeweller applying standard diamond-cleaning protocols to a fundamentally different material.

Cleaning should be done by hand, using warm water, a drop of mild dish soap, and a very soft brush. Work gently around the setting, rinse thoroughly, and pat dry with a lint-free cloth. Do not soak an emerald for extended periods, as prolonged exposure can affect the stability of clarity treatment in enhanced stones.

Storage and the Long View

Store emeralds individually, wrapped in soft cloth or in compartmentalised boxes with fabric-lined dividers. Even a slight knock against a harder stone can chip an emerald's girdle or disturb a surface-reaching fracture. Annual professional inspection by a qualified gemologist is advisable for any stone of significant value.
